BUSHIN DUCKS

Waaaaay back in grade school (this was in the teenage mutant ninja 80's) a classmate of mine came up with this idea called samurai ducks.
The samurai ducks were a direct lets call it an homage of TMNT.

Since grade school I have made quite a few homages myself. Still basically inspired by TMNT the Bushin Ducks are three different characters trained by the same sensei at different times in his life. Each duck is a master in a different skill set.

MAI the female, is a ninjitsu master. She could be right beside you and you wouldnt know it until it was too late. The big guy is KENSHIRO. Named after my favorite Fist of the NorthStar character, he is what is known as a hard master. This means his body has been trained to have a certain level of invulverability. MAL, the short tempered one, is the blade master. If its sharp, he can use it as a weapon. The story is pretty simple. Set in the future, the ducks encounter each other, travel together and try to find the commonalities in what thier sensei taught each one of them. Along the way the find a few scraps to get into...

TRU-STAR

In the Bushin Ducks future there are lawmen and women. Some of them walk the line between good and evil. Tru-star was inspired by the character Jeff Bridges played in the film True Grit. At least her personality is. Her visual is based on some of the old Clint Eastwood westerns like "2 mules for sister sarah" and "A fist full of dollars". The huge poncho to conceal movement, the big gun belt even the spurs on her boots. As a kind of space sheriff Tru-star wants nothing more than to bring criminals to justice. The ducks adventures will bring thier path into direct contact with this guntoting law giver....

I enjoyed doing this possible confrontataion between TRU and MAL. It didnt take too long once I sketched out the placement of the figures. The inks came out really well on this piece too. I want TRU-STAR to have these huge guns. It makes her guns look bigger because she is taller in stature than MAL..

I liked the angle of the border around the characters it is supposed to look like TRU is blocking the doorway as MAL is tryin' to leave.

One of the greatest parts of Bushin Ducks is coming up with the bounty hunter villians.

RINZAI is an evil to the core lady who would kill her own mother if it got her paid. It took a couple of weeks to get her visual right. I usually make my female characters a bit more attractive in the face but, RINZAI was supposed to look like a chinese parade dragon. Those are colorful but, not very pretty in the face. So after much back an forth this is the design I ended up liking. That thing she is sitting on is her weapon of choice, based on the japanese flintlock rifles
introduced in the 1800's. I would call it a flintlock bazooka.. the ducks better look out, this dragon breathes fire !!!

It took some convincing from REDWOLFS
Marc Adona to get me to continue on with this
one-shot title. Created as a scholarship submission
for an all comics art school, this idea didnt get me
the scholarship, but it did get me some great new
characters and ideas.
I know the name is pretty unique, I promise there
is a meaning behind it that is very cool.

I am planning a trade paperback for this first go

When tryin to come up with some kind of back story for mr. FACE I decided he should be a private detective. I then decided he needed a weapon. I thought of the folded paper guns we used to make in grade school. Once I came up with that the title of the one-shot Im gonna put him in popped up.

This awesome piece was done by Brian Roll of ODYSSEY ART.NET He does extraordinary work and captured ultimo perfectly.....

It has been a couple of years since I came up with the concept for COCKERS. For any new AOP fans out there lemme break down the history of these 2 titles.

I started with Bailey the scented wonder and Blitzen the lightning hound and rounded out the duo and made it a trio with Ultimo the ultra hound.

The original title COCKERS began as a 52 page pencil sketcth book. No ink, no color. After showing it to friends and pros alike the consensus was that I should ink and color it. I then enlisted the help of my highschool friend Katastrophe who is a photoshop wizard with color. By the time she was half way done coloring I had come up with 52 more pages and we added them together. After it was colored and lettered by REDWOLFS Marc Adona I realized I didnt have the money to print this 104 page monster.

That is when I came up with the concept of ULTIMO TALES.

ULTIMO TALES which on a timeline of events would occur before COCKERS.
I would also print it in 24to31 pages and in black and white because it was cheaper and flashbacks are usually done in black and white. I asked Katastrophe once again to come out of hiding to do the grey scale tonal seperations for ULTIMO TALES and she did issues one and two which are also available from comixpress or if you see me at this years BALTIMORE-CON!!!

I ended up taking the advice of a couple of friends who had suggested I could break the full color COCKERS novel into 4 smaller books since I had so many pages. It would be cheaper to print and I would have for issues of story before I had to jump to COCKERS volume 2. Sooooo I finally took the advice and chopped up the novel and now I have 1 issue of COCKERS and 2 issues of ULTIMO TALES in print. (no applause please, just by my books)

The concept of BROBOTICUS came from an

attempt of mine to enter a scholarship contest for

this art school in Vermont.

The requirements were to create a comic of at least

two pages or more and include a robot, a piece of fruit, myself

and a snowman. These seemingly random things came

together to form the story that you will eventually see in

the upcoming BURST anthology.....

COMMANDER CHAOS

This month one of my favorite funny men died.

I grew up in the eighties so the most enduring pop-culture

references in my head are from that era.

One movie that I will never forget is Canonball Run.

It was full of action, comedy, fast cars and it even

had its own super hero: Captain Chaos, Dom Deluise 's alter ego in

the film. Whenever Burt Reynolds would come up against trouble

his best friend changed into Captain Chaos, yeah, he didnt have any

super-powers but it was the fact that he put on the mask and cape on

to help out his friend. Anyhow, I loved that movie and I am a fan of

Deluise. Commander Chaos will hopefully make an appearance in COCKERS

I would name him Captain Chaos but, Im not sure

if that is copy written or not..... since Deluise was a big guy I chose

a bear to represent him in the super hero community.

I know you all thought I been slackin' this whole time.

In acuality I have been dealing with real life. You know jobs,

Lets see, good news? I have a new story being published in an

anthology from redwolfstudios called BURST. The anthology is

going to debut at this years BALTI-CON. So this October attend

the Batimore Comic Convention and pick up your copy of BURST!!!

This is the middle piece which employs many of the

supporting cast in the COCKERS series. There is JONESI the homeless

dog down at the left, beside him is orphan ANNIE and her little stuffed bear

Mr. POOPERS.

ANNIE is allergic to the mist in MYSTY CITY so she has to wear this breathing suit

that is like a big inhaler. Above them is PAT NIMASANG of NIMASANGS tea emporium.

The other characters are underground heroes who will debut later...

This is the final piece of the total work.

I felt it was appropriate to have al the bad guys at the end.

This being a COCKERS property all of the villians will be revealed

in later issues of COCKERS. I suppose everyone should know the

DEADLY FLUFFY by now, the characters that are in similar uniforms

are his evil group the CRIMSON SCARE. The big bug in the background

is SIMON the DEADLY FLEA, another of ULTIMOS arch nemeses.

One day Im gonna get some color on this thing and make it a huge poster...

In my effort to create a character who was just as
dynamic as Ultimo I ended up going no further than Ultimo himself.
Ultimah is Ultimo from another reality. If you are a comic book reader already this will make sense, if not bear with me. In the realm of science fiction some believe that there are alternate realities that exist parallel to our own where each person or creature in this universe has an evil twin or whatever. Anyhow, Ultimah isnt evil in fact the only difference is that shes a she. She has all the same powers as Ultimo and she can have a litter of puppies too, how cool is that?

nowadays though i prefer the looseleaf method of drawing on single pages.

For everyone who stopped by the A.O.P./REDWOLF table and supported the cause for comics.
It isnt easy putting your heart and soul into something and puttin it on a table to exchange for monetary compensation. Its odd being an artist. Many artists spend years in obscurity before they are "discovered" if they ever are. I met quite a few people who werent sure whether they should persue creating comics. I encouraged them to at least give it a try if that is what they truly wanted. There are an infinite number of variables when starting a business, the comics game is no different.
I suppose each artist has to ask themselves do you want to make comics or not? Then each artist must decide if they will do it as an independent or try and make it with a larger company. You more than likely will not make any money right away but, do you wanna make comics or not?
well, I decided a while ago that I want to make comics. The hurdles and obstacles really dont matter.

Just in case you think Ive been slacking this whole time you are all kindsa wrong.
This me at the PHILADELHIA-CON this past summer gettin my sketch on. This was my 1st con since I did the SPX(small press xpo) some odd years ago. Philly was cool, I made some money and a few contacts. It was also the debut of my DOGGY-BAGS, a promotional item that I came up with that consisted of : a cockers,ULTIMO TALES issue #1, an original sketch of ULTIMO, a cockers T-SHIRT (ya cant get those anywhere) and a little baggie of scooby snax. The scooby snax were actually graham crackers, most people thought they were real dog biscuits.

Glori Hound, one of the underground heroes who covertly helps innocents. With no real powers Glori is one of my favorite characters because I love her costume and the fact that I patterned her face after snoopy. In fact there are many faces in the series who I patterned after the famous beagle from peanuts the comics strip.

Blitzen is the youngest of the Mysty City trio. Even so, his personality is by far the most grim and sad. I will explore the whys and how comes in the second series of "ULTIMO TALES". The characters costume is inspired by other characters with the same powers: Static, Black Lightning and the lesser remembered Black Vulcan from the Superfriends show back in the 80'sSome of you may have noticed that the design I used on the Cockers characters legs are more dog like than others, that is also something that will be explained in later issues of the series. Thanks for your patience, you have really been great!!!

The next few sketches are of characters that will make thier appearance later on in the Cockers mythology. Ginger the mystic, Snicker Snaq the acrobatic android, Bishop the short powerhouse.

Tri Q Rox, The twin Sister of Pat the Tea house Owner, has a place of her own Called "On The Rox". A nightclub that will also appear later down the road in Cockers.

Snicker Snaq is an automated life form created by a brilliant scientist bound to her home by an illness caused by the mist in Mysty City.

ULTIMO TALES COVER#1

Yes I realize there are 2 #one issues on this blog already. A quick story about that, while developing the title "COCKERS" I began the format as a 52 page black and white series of comic books, shortly after I recieved feed back from local shop owners, comic book professionals and close personal friends. All telling me the same thing. I was gonna have a hard time selling my book in black and white as an unknown artist.
At times I can be quite stubborn about what it is that I want (ask any of my previous girlfriends). It took me a while to get with the program but, I finally colored the thing and added an additional chapter which is also 52 pages. The result is a gorgeous 103 page original graphic novel that I cannot wait to see in print. Now for the bad news, the full color graphic novel is damn expensive so to raise money for the thing I came up with this idea to do a prequel series called "ULTIMO TALES". Ultimo Tales tells the story of what happened before the reader gets to the Cockers graphic novel. The format is black and white so its gonna be cheaper to print and its only gonna be 24 pages so its gonna be cheaper to print and dont worry the art is off the hook!!! Black and white never looked so good!!!

THE DEADLY FLUFFY

The marker illustrations are actually color keys for my colorist Ms. Katastrophe. Thank you so much for doing such a wonderful job helping me give my vision of heroes vibrant life.

The deadly fluffy is the 1st villain you see in the 1st volume of Cockers. He is a pomerenean with an evil genius brain far beyond that of any living mammal. I love fluffy because is quite maniacal. He does what he wants to do, when he wants to do it, without consideration of the consequence to the young, old or innocent.

Just like in a feature length film I sometimes need extras or people to fill in the background in certain scenes. These next sketches and marker drawings are of extras I used in the background of certain scenes. Some of them have more than just filler roles in the story like Pat who owns NimaSangs Tea Emporium. A tea house that will be seen alot throughout the Cockers Series.

BAILEY THE SCENTED WONDER

Ultimo is powerful but not all powerful. He has two partners who share in his crimefighting responsibilities, one of whom is Bailey the scented wonder. Bailey is an unusual character

for 2 reasons. (A) He would rather drink tea and read books than fight supervillains (B) he can control his own body odor. Yes, gross I know, but consider it, Bailey can make his body odor so potent that it can become solid like a wall.

I like Bailey because he is a versatile creation. He can be a thinker or a brawler. A superhero character or a pulp noir character who does detective work.

These 1st couple of sketches are of a character named ULTIMO. Ultimo is a cocker spaniel with powers beyond that of the average mortal dog his personality is easy going eventempered and compassionate. Even when facing the bad guys Ultimo holds back his full strength for fear of destroying someone.

I have a couple of projects here that I'm very excited about. this 1st title is "COCKERS". An action adventure series about a superhero cockerspaniel named Ultimo. Here are a couple of sketches of the lead dog himself.
